Pathways to credible renewable electricity claims

Innovac Energy supports global organizations with renewable energy from strategy and sourcing through contracting and ongoing reporting.

What Are Renewable Energy Certificates?

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated and injected into the power grid.

When renewable electricity is produced, two products are created:

  • The physical electricity
  • The environmental attributes (REC)

The REC can be traded separately from the electricity itself, allowing businesses anywhere in the world to support renewable energy generation and claim renewable electricity usage according to recognized standards.

RECs are also internationally recognised for meeting renewable energy commitments and within frameworks such as RE100, Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), LEED and GHG – Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

types of Renewable Energy

Solar: Captures energy from the sun using PV panels or solar thermal systems, often used on rooftops or in large farms.

Wind: Uses turbines to convert the kinetic energy of wind into electricity, both onshore and offshore.

Hydro: Utilizes flowing water in rivers or dams to generate electricity.

Biomass: Processes organic materials (plants, waste) to create fuel, often used for heating or electricity.

Geothermal: Extracts heat from beneath the Earth’s crust for heating or electricity generation.

Why Companies Purchase RECs
  • Reduce Carbon Footprint – Lower Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions and progress towards net-zero commitments.
  • Meet ESG & Sustainability Targets – Support sustainability reporting frameworks and corporate ESG initiatives.
  • Enhance Brand Reputation – Demonstrate environmental responsibility to customers, investors, and stakeholders.
  • Cost-Effective Decarbonization – Achieve renewable energy goals without investing directly in renewable infrastructure.

REC Standards We Support

We work with a wide range of internationally recognized and regional renewable energy certificate standards, including:

  • International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC, TIGRs)
  • Australia (LGC)
  • China (GEC)
  • Japan (J-Credit)
  • Taiwan (T-REC)

Choose the right instrument for your goals

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

Procure and retire certificates to substantiate renewable electricity claims with clear documentation and audit-ready reporting.

Support: Sourcing, quality screening, retirement, reporting

Best for: Scope 2 market-based claims, multi-site portfolios, near-term targets

Benefits: Flexible volumes, fast deployment, transparent retirement evidence

Physical Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

Long-term renewable electricity supply where delivery is physical—supporting stable procurement and direct renewable sourcing in applicable markets.

Support: Market assessment, sourcing, contracting, performance tracking

Best for: Sites with physical delivery options, long-term supply planning

Benefits: Long-term price visibility, credible renewable supply, potential additionality

Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA)

A financial contract for differences that supports new renewable generation while helping manage electricity price risk—without physical delivery.

Support: Feasibility, pricing, contracting, settlement and reporting

Best for: Large loads, multi-region portfolios, long-term decarbonisation roadmaps

Benefits: Enables new projects, hedge structure options, scalable impact
